[Glenn H. Berry Olympic photographs and gymnastics memorabilia from the Harold J. Frey Olympic collection.]

Creator/Contributor:

Berry, Glenn H., 1906-1996, creator

Abstract:

Approximately 640 photographs and related memorabilia documenting Glenn Berry's experience at the 1928 and 1932 Olympic Games. One photograph album documents Berry's train trip to New York, the U.S. Olympic trials, voyage to Amsterdam for the 1928 Olympics, and travels in Europe following the games. Many athletes, on-ship workouts, and Olympic living and training quarters are pictured, as well as historical sites. A second album documents Berry's trip to New York for the 1932 Olympic trials, his return train journey on the Olympic Special (although he did not make the team), and preparations for the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. Included are snapshots around the Olympic Village, and of numerous events including track and field. Both Olympic albums are heavily annotated and form illustrated diaries, with some pages containing detailed narrations of the day's events along with Berry's snapshots. In the second (1932) album, personal and family photographs are also included; chiefly a camping and fishing trip to Mammoth in 1934, with the Berry family and gymnast Eddie Gross. Some family photographs, probably from the 1940s, are present. Berry's autograph book appears to date to 1928 and is an extensive collection of Olympics signatures, including Johnny Weissmuller, Buster Crabbe, and Eleanor Holm. Several extensively autographed keepsakes (menus) of the Olympic Special train journey are present, as well as several loose photographic prints of gymnastic teams.
